Mariota back starting for Titans
The quarterback situation continues to be the topic for the Tennessee Titans heading into this week’s matchup against the defending Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles.
Marcus Mariota, who came off the bench last week once Blaine Gabbert was knocked out of the game, is back in the starting lineup for the first time since suffering the nerve injury in his throwing arm that has caused tingling and numbness in his fingers. Mariota is still wearing the partial glove on his throwing hand, which he says helps
“I mean the glove helps in terms of getting more grip. Eventually, I’d like to get rid of it. I don’t really like having something on my hand. For now, it’s helping, so I’ll continue to use it,” he said.
Mariota says he is still taking it day by day, but said the hand is much improved from what it was when the injury occurred in the season opener. A few days after that, even normal dexterity functions were difficult, much less trying to play quarterback in the NFL.
“Early on it was a little different, like turning the key or turning the car on and different things like that. Again, as the weeks have gone on, it’s gotten better and those things have kind of gone away,” Mariota said.
Meanwhile, Gabbert, who started two games in Mariota’s absence, is on the shelf with a concussion. His injury is serious enough that he probably won’t be available this week. The Titans signed quarterback Austin Davis off the street.
SERIES HISTORY: 12th regular-season meeting. Eagles lead series, 7-4. The Titans last hosted the Eagles in 2010. That was the day that Kenny Britt missed the first quarter for disciplinary reasons and then had 225 yards receiving over the final three periods.
