Razorbacks settle on starting quarterback

The Arkansas Razorbacks suffered their third consecutive loss last Saturday, dropping their SEC opener 34-3 at Auburn.

But the Razorbacks (1-3, 0-1 SEC) have found their starting quarterback.

Coach Chad Morris said after the game that junior Ty Storey has won the quarterback job after battling with sophomore Cole Kelley throughout the preseason and the first three weeks of the season.

Storey made his second start of the season in the loss to Auburn and completed 13 of 31 passes for 141 yards and an interception. He also ran 10 times for 63 yards, although his official rushing numbers were 12 carries for 44 yards including two sacks for a total of 19 yards in losses.

“I thought Ty was a warrior,” Morris said. “I thought he was a warrior and he was gritty. I thought he played with a chip on his shoulder, and the moment was not too big for him.”

Kelley played briefly against Auburn, carrying twice on quarterback keepers for a total of two yards. He did not attempt a pass.

Kelley and Storey alternated as the Arkansas starter for the first four games, with Kelley starting the season opener against Eastern Illinois and the third game against North Texas. Storey started the second game against Colorado State before getting the nod against Auburn. His performance against Auburn was enough to convince Morris that he can lead the Arkansas offense.

“Obviously, there were some throws we wish he could have back,” Morris said. “But this is a guy who kept fighting, just like they all did.

“I’m very proud of Ty. I’m extremely proud of him moving forward and the way he played tonight. I thought Ty did some really good things tonight.”

For the season, Storey has completed 30 of 61 passes for 438 yards and 3 touchdowns with 3 interceptions. He also has 70 yards rushing on 17 carries.

Kelley has completed 31 of 56 passes for 379 yards and 3 touchdowns with 4 interceptions. Kelley has run 12 times for 14 yards and a touchdown.
