Injuries force TCU QB Baldwin to quit

Injuries have forced former Ohio State and TCU quarterback Matthew Baldwin to give up the sport.

A four-star recruit in 2018, Baldwin never played a down for the Buckeyes or the Horned Frogs.

“Couldn’t get out of the injury loop with back and knee,” he told the Fort Worth Star-Telegram in a text message.

The native of Austin, Texas redshirted the 2018 season in Columbus due to a knee injury. He completed 20 of 36 passes for 246 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions in the Ohio State spring game in April 2019 before deciding to transfer to TCU.

The NCAA approved Baldwin’s appeal for immediate eligibility last season, but he did not appear in a game.

Baldwin is expected to continue his studies at TCU and will remain on scholarship.

His mother, Mindy Baldwin, told the Star-Telegram that her son underwent three knee surgeries but had been hopeful that treatments on his nagging back would help him be ready for the 2020 season.

“We thought this break would be the perfect chance to get his back well,” she said. “He did PT, various shots, a nerve ablation, but nothing has worked. We are all so heartbroken that Matthew won’t be suiting up this year, but we will be cheering those guys on.”
