Cleveland Indians right fielder Josh Naylor had to be carted off the field Sunday after a collision with teammate Ernie Clement during the fourth inning of a game against the host Minnesota Twins.
In the bottom of the fourth, Jorge Polanco sent a flare into shallow right and both Naylor and Clement charged after it.
The two collided, with Naylor sent sprawling.
Medical staff was quickly dispatched to the field and Naylor was seen having his right ankle placed into an air cast before he was taken off the field in a cart.
“We know that there’s a fracture,” Indians manager Terry Francona said after the game. “Other than that, he’s being evaluated over at the hospital right now. We’ll know more, I hope, in a couple hours. We’re not even sure if he can travel home with us.”
Francona said he did not “want to guess” on where the fracture is.
“Everyone is certainly thinking about him and I was worried about Ernie (Clement), too,” Francona said. “Ernie had a pretty good cut on his chin. We’ll get more information. We know he will be getting the best care possible which is fortunate.”
Bradley Zimmer entered the game to replace Naylor.
