Indians 2B Kipnis has season-ending wrist injury

Cleveland Indians second baseman Jason Kipnis will miss the rest of the season with a broken bone in his right wrist.

Kipnis left Sunday’s game against Minnesota after experiencing discomfort on a swing and miss. On Monday an MRI revealed a fracture of his hamate bone.

The two-time All-Star is expected to have surgery and will need up to six weeks of recovery time.

Kipnis, 32, batted .245 with 17 homers, 23 doubles, 65 RBIs and 52 runs in 121 games this season.

The Indians recalled utilityman Andrew Velazquez from Triple-A Columbus in a corresponding move.

Velazquez, 25, was acquired from the Tampa Bay Rays in a July 3 trade and has not yet appeared in a game with Cleveland. He had two hits in 12 plate appearances for the Rays in May.
