The San Francisco Giants placed catcher Buster Posey on the seven-day concussion injured list Thursday.
Posey told NBC Sports that he sustained the injury when a foul ball struck his mask Sunday in Cincinnati. He played in Tuesday’s game at Colorado, but said he didn’t feel right and got checked out on Wednesday.
“I felt like I should have felt more normal than this after three days,” said Posey, who will be eligible to return next Wednesday.
Posey, 32, is batting .245 with two homers and 13 RBIs in 32 games this season.
This is the second time the six-time All-Star and 2012 National League MVP has been placed on the concussion list. In April 2017, he was struck in the helmet by a fastball from Arizona right-hander Taijuan Walker.
Posey told NBC Sports he will spend his time off talking to doctors and researching the long-term effects of concussions.
“When you’re dealing with the brain, you’ve got to be cautious,” he said. “I definitely value who I am and will be as a husband and father, first and foremost. At the same time, I enjoy doing my job and plan on doing my job.”
San Francisco also placed left-hander Drew Pomeranz on the 10-day injured list with a left lat strain.
Pomeranz is 1-4 with a 5.93 ERA in seven starts in his first season with the Giants.
In corresponding transactions, the team recalled right-hander Tyler Beede and catcher Aramis Garcia from Triple-A Sacramento.
