The San Francisco Giants acquired former All-Star second baseman Scooter Gennett from the Cincinnati Reds at Wednesday’s MLB trade deadline, according to multiple outlets.
Varying reports had the Reds receiving either cash considerations or a player to be named later in return.
Gennett, 29, missed the first half of the season due to a severe groin strain suffered in spring training.
He made his 2019 debut on June 28 and has struggled to find a groove, batting just .212 with zero home runs and five RBIs in 20 games.
Gennett was an All-Star in 2018 when he batted .310 with 23 homers and 92 RBIs in 154 games. It was his second straight season with at least 20 homers and 90 RBIs for the Reds.
Gennett is a lifetime .287 hitter with 85 homers and 354 RBIs in 771 games with the Milwaukee Brewers (2013-16) and Reds.
The right-handed hitter is playing this season on a one-year contract worth $9,775,000.
The move enables the Reds to give more playing time to veterans Derek Dietrich and Jose Peraza and rookie Josh VanMeter.
