Jacksonville University has discontinued its football program.
The school, which competes in the Football Championship Subdivision in football, said it spent more than a year examining its resources across the athletic department.
“This was a difficult decision,” athletic director Alex Ricker-Gilbert said in a statement.
“Our student-athletes and coaches in the football program are talented, tenacious and hard working. We respect them immensely. Reinvesting these resources into our other Division I programs better positions us to enhance the experience for all 450 student-athletes.”
Jacksonville went 3-9 this season, including a 1-7 mark in the Pioneer League. The Dolphins began their football program in 1998.
The school announced it is offering full-tuition scholarships to football players who stay at Jacksonville until graduation, and that all contracts with its coaches would be honored.
