Jacksonville Jaguars cornerback Jalen Ramsey called the team Sunday night to inform officials he was ill and wouldn’t be at the facility on Monday.
Ramsey will see the team doctor on Monday, head coach Doug Marrone said, adding that he was informed in a message from the trainer.
“If you’re sick, you’re sick — what are you going to do?” Marrone said.
Asked if he felt Ramsey’s perceived state of limbo with the team was a distraction, Marrone said it shouldn’t be.
“I can’t speak for all the players,” Marrone said Monday. “We all have responsibilities. We all have a job. That’s how I look at it. I control the things I can control. I don’t get crazy with the things on the outside.”
Ramsey requested a trade after a sideline clash with head coach Doug Marrone, but there is no deal in place. Owner Shad Khan said Thursday night he would be more inclined to give Ramsey a raise than trade him.
According to Marrone, other players have followed the same protocol to call in sick.
“It’s happened, I don’t want to exaggerate and say hundreds of times, but it’s happened here since I’ve been the head coach a couple of times,” Marrone said. “To me it’s nothing big, but I understand it’s a big story because of the other things that are around it.”
The 24-year-old Ramsey said the Jaguars leaked the information that he wanted a trade, a request he claimed was not shared by anyone from his camp.
Several teams inquired about Ramsey, per multiple reports, including the Kansas City Chiefs, Oakland Raiders and Minnesota Vikings.
