Chicago Cubs right-hander Craig Kimbrel was placed on the 10-day injured list due to right-elbow inflammation, team president of baseball operations Theo Epstein announced before Thursday night’s game against the Milwaukee Brewers.
Kimbrel, 31, underwent an MRI exam and nothing overly troubling was detected. The move was retroactive to Monday.
Chicago recalled infielder David Bote from Triple-A Iowa to take Kimbrel’s roster spot.
Kimbrel last pitched Sunday when he was tagged for three runs in just two-thirds of an inning against the Atlanta Braves.
Kimbrel has converted 13-of-15 save opportunities but with a 5.68 ERA. He made his debut with Chicago on June 27 after signing a three-year, $43-million deal. He sat out the beginning of the season due to a sluggish free-agent market.
Bote hit .262 with 10 homers and 40 RBIs in 108 games for the Cubs earlier this season.
