Cubs’ Bryant still under evaluation after collision

Chicago Cubs slugger Kris Bryant is still being evaluated after leaving Sunday’s loss to the Cincinnati Reds in the sixth inning following a collision with teammate Jason Heyward.

“He’s doing OK,” manager Joe Maddon told reporters afterward. “He’s still under evaluation. We don’t know exactly what we’re dealing with with this whole thing yet. But we’re trying to talk with the docs and him to find out exactly where we’re at. So, I don’t have anything new to report yet.”

Bryant appeared to take a hit to the head or neck as he collided with Heyward, who was playing center field with Bryant in right. Both players had enough range to track down Eugenio Suarez’s fly ball just shy of the warning track in right center, but Heyward’s call for the ball apparently wasn’t heard on a windy day with a noisy crowd.

“It is loud,” Maddon said. “Even when I got out there to see him, my goodness, everything’s like right in your face. And I can see where it’d be very difficult to hear one another. It’s just a combination of things. It’s probably the first time I think we’ve done that all year. It’s going to happen at some point.”

Bryant, who was charged with an error on the play as both players missed the fly, spun upon impact and rolled to his knees, remaining on one knee for a few moments. Trainers came out to tend to him before he was pulled for Albert Almora Jr.

The Cubs lost 10-2, their third loss in four games and seventh in 12. They visit Houston for a three-game interleague series starting Monday.

Bryant, 27, is batting .288 with 12 homers and 34 RBIs in 49 games this season, already near his 2018 totals of 13 homers and 52 RBIs, which required 102 games.
