Concussions force Oklahoma TE Calcaterra to retire


Oklahoma tight end Grant Calcaterra announced that multiple concussions have led him to retire from football.

He posted a three-minute video to Twitter on Thursday night, explaining his decision as well as thanking his family, coaches, teammates and fans.

“To everybody who’s been a part of my football journey, Thank You,” he wrote in the tweet accompanying his video.

Calcaterra was a four-star prospect and the nation’s No. 6 tight end when he committed to the Sooners’ Class of 2017, according to the 247Sports composite. A junior, he last played on Oct. 5 and since suffered a concussion in practice.

He said he will graduate from Oklahoma in May, then return to his native Southern California to work toward becoming a firefighter.

“I gave everything I had to this team and this game,” Calcaterra said. “I’d like to think it might have caused an impact on this university, this football program and all the people around me.”

Calcaterra was an All-Big 12 First Team selection in 2018 and played in 14 games 11 starts. He for 396 yards (15.2 per catch) and six touchdowns had 26 catches for 396 yards and six touchdowns.

In five games this season, he had five receptions for 79 yards. He ends his Sooners career with 41 catches for 637 yards and nine touchdowns.
