Cardinals to rest IF Carpenter (back tightness)

Infielder and St. Louis Cardinals leadoff man Matt Carpenter will likely not play again until Wednesday after suffering from back tightness on Saturday, the team announced Sunday.

St. Louis manager Mike Shildt said the rest is just precautionary and that Carpenter will likely be back in the lineup after Tuesday’s off day.

“We’re not concerned about it,” said Shildt. “He’s not concerned about it. But we want to be judicious and give him a couple of days.”

Carpenter, 33, is hitting .179 with three home runs and seven strikeouts in 28 at-bats this spring, appearing in 11 games.

Right fielder Dexter Fowler will lead off in place of Carpenter, with first baseman Paul Goldschmidt moving up to second in the order.

The Cardinals face the Miami Marlins in a spring training game in Jupiter, Fla. on Sunday. They face the Philadelphia Phillies, also in Jupiter, on Monday.
