Cardinals activate 3B Carpenter from IL

The St. Louis Cardinals have activated third baseman Matt Carpenter from the 10-day injured list ahead of Sunday’s series finale against the Oakland Athletics.

Carpenter originally went on the IL on July 16 with a contusion after fouling a ball off the top of his right foot against the Pittsburgh Pirates. Carpenter had only been back with the team since July 11, having been previously sidelined with a lower back strain.

Carpenter, 33, is batting .215 with 10 home runs and 29 RBIs this season.

The Cardinals also recalled righthander Ryan Helsley from Triple-A Memphis and optioned first baseman/outfielder Rangel Ravelo to the same club. Righthander Mike Mayers was designated for assignment.

Helsley is on his sixth stint with the team this season and has posted a 2.92 ERA in eight appearances so far.

Ravelo has appeared in 14 games and hit .158 with two doubles in 19 at-bats. Mayers has given up 11 earned runs in 13 2/3 innings over 12 appearances.
