Veteran catcher Josh Phegley is retiring, his management company said Wednesday.
In a tweet, Pro Star Management cited “family considerations and business opportunities” as reasons for Phegley’s decision.
Phegley became a free agent after the 2020 season, in which he played in just 11 games for the Chicago Cubs and hit .063 in 16 at-bats.
Phegley, who turns 33 next week, played for the Chicago White Sox (2013-14), Oakland Athletics (2015-19) and Cubs. He appeared in 387 career games — his high was 106 in 2019 — and hit .225 with 35 home runs and 162 RBIs.
Selected by the White Sox with the 38th overall pick in the 2009 amateur draft, Phegley had a .994 fielding percentage and threw out 33 percent of runners attempting to steal.
