The Tampa Bay Buccaneers placed quarterback Blaine Gabbert on injured reserve Tuesday, a month after he dislocated his left (non-throwing) shoulder in a preseason game.
Gabbert was hurt Aug. 23 against the Cleveland Browns and has not practiced since, though he was kept on the 53-man roster for the first three weeks of the regular season. He will be eligible to be recalled from IR after Week 11, if the team chooses to do so.
Ryan Griffin has been serving as Jameis Winston’s backup with Gabbert out.
Gabbert, who turns 30 in October, signed with Tampa Bay in March, reuniting with Bruce Arians after he played for the head coach in Arizona in 2017. He has a career passer rating of 71.7 across eight seasons.
To take Gabbert’s spot on the 53-man roster, the Bucs promoted defensive lineman Patrick O’Connor from the practice squad, signing wideout Ishmael Hyman to fill the vacated practice squad spot.
O’Connor, 25, was a seventh-round pick by the Bucs in 2017. He appeared in three games that year but has not played in the regular season since.
