Browns TE Njoku on IR; injuries hamper secondary

Cleveland Browns starting tight end David Njoku has been placed on injured reserve because of a broken wrist, the team announced Friday.

Njoku reportedly was seeking additional medical opinions on the injury, but a source told ESPN’s Adam Schefter that the player might require surgery.

Njoku was injured in the first quarter of the Browns’ 23-3 victory over the New York Jets on Monday night. On the same play, he suffered a concussion as he appeared to land on his head and neck after being upended by Jets cornerback Nate Hairston on an attempted pass from quarterback Baker Mayfield.

Njoku did not make a catch in the game after hauling in four receptions for 37 yards and a touchdown in the season-opening loss to the Tennessee Titans.

In his third NFL season, all with the Browns, the 23-year-old from Jersey City, N.J., has career totals of 92 receptions for 1,062 yards and nine touchdowns.

The Browns also ruled out two other starters for Sunday’s game against the Los Angeles Rams: safety Damarious Randall (concussion) and linebacker Christian Kirksey (chest). Backup offensive tackle Kendall Lamm (knee) is also out.

In a corresponding move Friday, the Browns claimed former Oakland Raiders safety Juston Burris off waivers. In his fifth NFL season, Burris has played in 38 career games, totaling 28 tackles, two interceptions, seven passes defensed and 11 special teams tackles. He played four games with the Browns last season after starting his career with the New York Jets (2016-18).

The move was likely made because the Browns’ entire starting secondary missed practice on Friday, including cornerbacks Denzel Ward and Greedy Williams (hamstring injuries for each) and safety Morgan Burnett (quadriceps).
