Cornerback Bryce Callahan will have his Denver Broncos debut pushed back four to six weeks after having a non-surgical procedure on his left foot, head coach Vic Fangio told reporters Wednesday.
Fangio added that injured reserve remains a possibility for Callahan, who practiced on a limited basis in eight of nine practice sessions through the first three weeks but has yet to suit up for a game.
Callahan, 27, fractured his foot last season with the Chicago Bears, missing the final three games after having surgery. He participated fully for much of the offseason, but had the same foot stepped on during training camp in August, keeping him out of the preseason and now into the regular season.
“He’s still having complications from the injury he had last year and the surgery he had after the injury,” Fangio said.
The Broncos signed Callahan to a three-year, $21 million contract in March, reuniting him with Fangio after the two spent four years together in Chicago. In four career seasons, Callahan has four interceptions and 20 pass-breakups in 45 games (29 starts).
With Callahan out, safety Kareem Jackson has worked primarily at nickel cornerback through three weeks.
Meanwhile, defensive end Derek Wolfe’s ankle injury sustained Sunday in Green Bay was not as serious as the team anticipated.
“They came back better than we were initially worried, and Derek is doing much better,” Fangio said. “He has a chance this week, but he’ll be questionable all week.”
Linebacker Josey Jewell, who injured his hamstring on Sunday, also has a chance to play this week against the Jacksonville Jaguars, Fangio said.
