Broken wrist sidelines Diamondbacks C Carson Kelly

The Arizona Diamondbacks placed catcher Carson Kelly on the 10-day injured list due to a fractured right wrist, adding to the woes of the worst team in the majors.

Arizona also recalled infielder Josh VanMeter and catcher/outfielder Daulton Varsho from Triple-A Reno and optioned right-handed pitcher Kevin Ginkel to Reno.

Kelly was hit by a pitch from Dodgers right-hander Walker Buehler in the second inning of Arizona’s 9-3 loss to Los Angeles. Kelly remained in the game to run the bases and caught in the top half of the third. He was replaced in the fourth inning by Stephen Vogt.

“I toughed it out for that inning,” Kelly said. “I was throwing the ball back and that was OK. I tried to really gear it up to throw and that did not feel good at all. It sucks. That’s the best way to sum it up.”

Saturday’s loss was the 16th in the row for the Diamondbacks, who are 25 1/2 games out of first place in the National League West before the midpoint of the season.

Kelly, who turns 27 next month, has been one of the brighter sides for the Diamondbacks. In 50 games this season, he is batting .260 with eight home runs and 26 RBIs.

VanMeter, 26, is batting .159 over 37 games for Arizona in 2021 with one home run and seven RBIs. In three seasons with the Cincinnati Reds (2019-20) and Arizona (2020-21), VanMeter owns a .202 batting average and has hit 11 home runs and 36 RBIs over 159 career games.

Varsho, 24, has appeared in 56 games in two seasons with the Diamondbacks, including 19 in 2021. He is a lifetime .183 hitter with three home runs and 11 RBIs in that time.
