Brewers place P Gonzalez on IL with arm fatigue

The Milwaukee Brewers placed veteran left-hander Gio Gonzalez on the 10-day injured list with arm fatigue on Saturday.

Gonzalez is 2-1 with a 3.19 ERA in six starts this season, striking out 26 and walking nine in 31 innings since signing with Milwaukee in late April.

Brewers manager Craig Counsell told reporters the two-time All-Star is dealing with a “dead arm.”

“He just doesn’t feel great throwing a baseball right now,” Counsell said. “Nothing structurally seems to be worrisome. It could be a product of a different spring training.”

Gonzalez, 33, spent part of the spring with the New York Yankees after a late signing, but he later was released from his minor league contract.

Gonzalez’s most recent start was Thursday at Minnesota. He allowed four runs on seven hits and struck out seven in 4 2/3 innings, throwing a season-high 102 pitches.

In a corresponding move, the Brewers activated catcher Manny Pina from the injured list. He had been sidelined since May 15 with a right hamstring strain. Pina is batting .133 with one homer and two RBIs in 23 games.
