Brewers call up top prospect Hiura

The Milwaukee Brewers called up top prospect Keston Hiura on Tuesday and placed third baseman Travis Shaw on the 10-day injured list.

In a corresponding move, infielder/outfielder Cory Spangenberg was designated for assignment.

Hiura, 22, was the Brewers’ first-round pick, No. 9 overall, in the 2017 draft. A UC Irvine product, the second baseman was batting .333 with 11 home runs, 26 RBIs and an on-base percentage of .408 for Triple-A San Antonio.

MLB.com’s most recent overall prospect ranking put him at No. 15 on the list.

The Brewers said Shaw had an injured hand and wrist, though he played Monday night in a loss at Philadelphia. He has struggled all season, batting .163 with four home runs, eight RBIs and 50 strikeouts in 135 at-bats.

It is expected that Mike Moustakas will move to his natural position at third base, after making 27 starts at second this season. Hiura is expected to get regular time at second.
