Blue Jays call up top prospect Bichette

The Toronto Blue Jays’ youth movement will continue, as middle infielder and top prospect Bo Bichette was called up to the major leagues for the first time Monday.

Bichette will bat sixth and play shortstop Monday night for the visiting Blue Jays against the Kansas City Royals.

The news comes in the wake of infielder Eric Sogard’s trade Sunday to the Tampa Bay Rays.

Bichette, 21, was batting .275 with eight home runs and 32 RBIs in 56 games at Triple-A Buffalo this season. The son of former major leaguer Dante Bichette was removed in the third inning of Sunday’s game against Durham.

Bo Bichette will join other top prospects, and sons of former major leaguers, to reach Toronto this season — Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and Cavan Biggio. ESPN’s Keith Law ranked Bichette as the fourth-best overall prospect in baseball, while Baseball America had him ranked sixth and MLB.com had him eighth.

Bichette, a second-round draft pick in 2016, missed some time earlier this season with a broken left hand.
