The Oakland Athletics bolstered their starting rotation on Wednesday, acquiring right-hander Tanner Roark from the Cincinnati Reds.
The 32-year-old Roark is scheduled to become a free agent in November.
In exchange, Cincinnati is receiving minor league center fielder Jameson Hannah, the A’s second-round selection in the 2018 MLB Draft. He was ranked as one of the A’s top 10 prospects.
The Reds also will pay $2.1 million of the $3.3 million remaining on Roark’s 2019 contract, the San Francisco Chronicle reported.
Roark was traded to the Reds last December after spending the first six seasons of his career with Washington. He is 6-7 with a 4.24 ERA in 21 starts this season. He has a 70-61 record with a 3.66 ERA in 203 career appearances, 162 of them starts.
Hannah, who turns 22 next month, played collegiately at Dallas Baptist and has spent the season with the Stockton Ports of the California League at the Class-A advanced level. On the season, he has a .283 average, with 25 doubles, two home runs and 31 RBIs.
The A’s entered Wednesday eight games behind first-place Houston in the American League West but a half-game up on Tampa Bay for the second wild-card spot.
