Arkansas defensive lineman Dorian Gerald will miss the rest of the season with a strained artery in his neck.
“Very strange injury,” Arkansas coach Chad Morris told reporters on Monday. “He’ll be on blood thinner and will be out for the rest of the year. We hope he will be released from the hospital late tonight or tomorrow.”
Morris said it would take time to determine whether Gerald will be able to resume his football career. He is a senior but has not taken his redshirt season.
“I think it’s something we won’t know for quite some time,” Morris said, adding doctors will conduct tests over the next “several months.”
Gerald suffered the injury in the Razorbacks’ season-opening 20-13 win over Portland State on Saturday.
Gerald, who transferred to Arkansas last season after beginning his career in community college, said he isn’t done playing.
He tweeted: “i’m done for the year! it isn’t a career ending injury, but it definitely is an injury that my coaches and family want me to watch carefully i’ll redshirt this year and ill be back next year stronger than ever.”
In the 2018 season at Arkansas, Gerald played in eight games, starting the final two. He had 21 tackles.
