The Arizona Diamondbacks put infielder Jake Lamb on the 10-day injured list Friday because of a strained left quadriceps, suffered Wednesday while he was running out a double against the San Diego Padres.
Arizona recalled infielder Ildemaro Vargas from Triple-A Reno in advance of Friday night’s home opener against the Boston Red Sox.
Lamb is hitting .267 in five games. He has been splitting time at first base with Christian Walker and started at his old position of third base on Wednesday as manager Torey Lovullo wanted to get both of their bats in the lineup.
Lamb, 28, is trying to bounce back from a 2018 season that was limited by an early shoulder injury that eventually required surgery in August. The left-handed hitter slugged 30 home runs in an All-Star season in 2017 and went deep 29 times in 2016.
Vargas, 27, has appeared in three games for Arizona this season, going 1 for 6 with a double. The switch-hitter has appeared in 29 games for the Diamondbacks since 2017, hitting .237 in 38 at-bats.
