The Los Angeles Angels have scratched Shohei Ohtani from Monday night’s start against the Tampa Bay Rays after taking a hit by pitch on the elbow in Sunday’s game.
Jose Quintana will be moved up from Tuesday to start in Ohtani’s place.
The Angels’ right-hander was hit by a 93 mph fastball on his pitching elbow in a 2-0 loss to the Mariners on Sunday but remained in the game. Manager Joe Maddon said after the game that Ohtani was sore.
Ohtani is 1-0 with a 3.29 ERA in three starts this season. He has 23 strikeouts but 13 walks in 13 2/3 innings.
Ohtani is hitting .263 (.917 OPS) with eight home runs and 20 RBIs in 25 games. It’s unclear if he’ll bat against the Rays.
Quintana is 0-2 with a 10.13 ERA and 2.325 WHIP in four starts this season.
