2016: Just when it seemed like “CarGo” would be injury-prone for his entire career, he made it through two essentially full seasons in 2015 and 2016. He went for more power in 2015, but last year’s pop giveback came with other advantages — a 27-point average jump, and more balance in his home/ road splits. Gonzalez was a five-category player in his salad days, but has just seven stolen bases over the past three seasons.
Forecast: Gonzalez no longer enters every season on the short list of MVP candidates, but he’s still a four-category factor and someone we can trust in all situations, home and away. He enters a contract year and the watertreading Rockies will probably dangle him on the trade market, but we have confidence his sweet swing would play anywhere.
