New York Yankees right-hander Chase Whitley was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a right elbow sprain, the team announced Friday.
Whitley left in the second inning on Thursday’s game because of the elbow problem, which was later diagnosed as a sprain.
“It’s been there for a little while, but adrenaline would take over during the game and I was fine,” Whitley said after Thursday’s game. “Tonight, it wouldn’t take over, and I felt it pretty much the whole time. It’s frustrating. When I first started dealing with it, I gave it to the Lord. Now it’s in his hands, and we’ll make the best of it.”
Whitley stepped in after Masahiro Tanaka went on the disabled list with wrist and forearm issues.
Whitley, 25, is 1-2 with a 4.19 ERA in four appearances, all as a starter.
His replacement in the rotation is expected to be Chris Capuano.
To fill Whitley’s place on the roster, the Yankees called up right-hander Jose Ramirez from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. Ramirez is 1-0 with 2.95 ERA and five saves in 13 appearances for Scranton-Wilkes-Barre, all in relief.
