Yankees sign LHP De Paula


The New York Yankees signed left-handed pitcher Jose De Paula to a one-year major league contract Wednesday.

De Paula, 26, went 4-3 with a 4.21 ERA over 51 1/3 innings in 16 appearances (10 starts) for Triple-A Fresno in 2014, striking out 41 batters. Following the season, he pitched for Gigantes del Cibao of the Dominican Baseball League.

The Villa Mella, Dominican Republic native joined the San Francisco Giants organization after being claimed off waivers from the San Diego Padres on Nov. 27, 2013.

Originally signed by San Diego as a non-drafted free agent on Nov. 1, 2006, De Paula spent his first seven professional seasons in the Padres organization (2007-13). In 105 career minor league appearances (89 starts), he is 33-27 with one save and a 3.86 ERA over 452 1/3 innings, recording 398 strikeouts.
