The New York Yankees on Tuesday placed infielder-outfielder Dustin Ackley, acquired at the trade deadline last week from the Seattle Mariners, on the 15-day disabled list with a right lumbar strain.

To take Ackley’s place on the roster, the Yankees called up right-hander Caleb Cotham from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

Ackley, expected to fill in for the Yankees at second base and in the outfield, was acquired on July 30 from the Mariners in exchange for outfielder Ramon Flores and right-hander Jose Ramirez. The 27-year-old Ackley saw action in two games for the Yankees and was 0-for-3 at the plate.

In 87 games this season, Ackley is batting .212 with six home runs and 19 RBIs. He is a career .245 hitter with 36 homers and 182 RBIs, all with Seattle since he broke into the major leagues in 2011 after he was selected No. 2 overall in the 2009 amateur draft.

The 27-year-old Cotham is 1-0 with a 1.29 ERA in 13 appearances for Scranton/Wilkes-Barre and 4-2 with a 2.77 ERA for Double-A Trenton this year.
