Aroldis Chapman will make his spring training debut with the New York Yankees on Thursday.
Manager Joe Girardi said Chapman is scheduled to pitch but the rest of his schedule will be determined after that outing.
Chapman signed a one-year, $11.325 million contract to avoid salary arbitration. He was acquired from the Cincinnati Reds in the offseason and is eligible to become a free agent at the end of the 2016 season.
Girardi allowed that managing Chapman’s work is a unique question for the Yankees because of a 30-game suspension for a violation of the domestic violence policy.
The left-handed Chapman was 4-4 with a 1.63 ERA and 33 saves for the Reds last season. He struck out 116 in 66 1/3 innings.
