New York Yankees pitcher Phil Hughes will miss at least a week of spring training after injuring his back in spring training in Tampa, Fla., the Newark Star Ledger reported Wednesday.
Hughes was doing fielding drills Monday when he hurt his back. He experienced upper-back stiffness and an MRI showed he has a bulging disk.
“Hopefully, this setbck doesn’t affect me too much,” Hughes told the Star-Ledger.
To help with the discomfort, Hughes is taking anti-inflammatory medication and said he hopes to be “symptom free in the next four to five days.”
Yankees general manager Brian Cashman said Wednesday that he doesn’t expect Hughes to resume throwing for two weeks.
Hughes posted a 16-13 record with a 4.32 ERA in 32 starts last season for the Yankees.
