New York Yankees third baseman Chase Headley left Thursday night’s game against the Tampa Bay Rays in the bottom of the ninth inning after he was struck in the face by a pitch.
A 98 mph fastball from Rays closer Jake McGee appeared to hit Headley in the mouth and chin area. After trainers attended to Headley on the field for several minutes, he left under his own power holding a bandage on his bloody chin.
Headley was to undergo X-rays on his jaw to determine the extent of the injury, according to a report.
The Yankees rallied after Headley was injured for a 5-4 victory when Chris Young hit a three-run, walk-off homer.
