The New York Yankees avoided arbitration with right-hander Michael Pineda and infielder-outfielder Dustin Ackley Friday, with Pineda reportedly agreeing to a one-year, $4.3 million contract and Ackley agreeing to a one-year, $3.2 million deal.
Four players, however, exchanged arbitration figures with the Yankees as pitchers Ivan Nova, Aroldis Chapman and Nathan Eovaldi, and shortstop Didi Gregorius will head to a hearing in February unless a settlement can be reached before then.
Chapman asked for $13 million, and the Yankees offered $9 million. However, Chapman could lose a portion his salary if he is suspended under the baseball’s new domestic violence policy. MLB is investigating the Yankees’ new closer for his role in an incident with his girlfriend in South Florida in October.
Gregorius wants $2,525,000 and the Yankees countered with $2.3 million, Nova filed for $4.6 million and New York offered $3.8 million, and Eovaldi asked for $6.3 million while the team is offering $4.9 million.
The Yankees also claimed minor league outfielder Lane Adams off waivers from Kansas City and designated infielder Ronald Torreyes, who was obtained in a trade with the Dodgers on Tuesday, for assignment.
