Looking for infield reinforcements, the New York Yankees acquired third baseman Chris Nelson from the Colorado Rockies for future considerations.

The Rockies will receive cash or a player to be named.

Nelson was designated for assignment Sunday to make room for top prospect Nolan Arenado, who became the team’s every day third baseman. The Yankees need help at the position after Kevin Youkilis ended up on the disabled list Tuesday with a lumbar spine sprain.

Nelson, 27, was batting .242 with a .600 OPS in 71 plate appearances this season. He hit .301 with a .352 on-base percentage in 345 at-bats in 2012.
