It had already been a season of outstanding personal performances for West Virginia’s Geno Smith before Saturday’s game against Kansas. But, the senior Mountaineer quarterback saved his best for last in the 59-10 victory.

His performance against the Jayhawks has earned Smith recognition as the NRA/Lindy’s Gunslinger of the Week … for the third time this season.

Playing on the field in Morgantown for the final time in his career, Smith’s day was near perfection.

He threw the ball 24 times and had 23 completions for 407 yards and three touchdowns with one interception. It was the third time this season that he passed for over 400 yards. His 95.8 completion percentage matched the all-time single-game Bowl Subdivision record set by Tennessee’s Tee Martin in 1998. And, he became the first quarterback this season to throw 40 touchdown passes.

Earlier, Smith was named NRA/Lindy’s Gunslinger of the Week for his performance against James Madison, then two weeks later after his game against Baylor.

Throughout the 2012 season, the top passing performance in college football each week has been honored with this recognition from the National Rifle Association and Lindy’s Sports. The NRA/Lindy’s National Gunslinger of the Year will be named in December.
