WHAT’S AHEAD: Northwestern’s four-game homestand has completed, and a tough road test awaits it; the Wildcats must travel to State College, Pa. for a battle with the upstart Penn State Nittany Lions.

–NU’s defense faltered in the second half, and its 27-point lead diminished to a one-possession margin. However, the issues weren’t schematic, but rather due to lack of execution. “That’s something we’ll correct and be able to see on film,” said linebacker Damien Proby. “It’ll be something to learn from going forward.”

–The game plan Northwestern offered with Kain Colter is just the beginning of tricks up the coaches’ sleeves, as suggested by head coach Pat Fitzgerald. “We are just getting started, with the things we’re going to do there,” he offered.

–Fitzgerald expressed frustration in how Colter continues to take big hits because he isn’t sliding to the turf to avoid contact. “He believes he can score on every play,” Fitzgerald added. “That’s not a bad quality.” Colter isn’t going to stop, either. “You’re going to be sore, no matter what,” he said. “It’s part of football.”

KEEP AN EYE ON: RG Matt Frazier — He is listed on Northwestern’s two-deep as the backup at right guard, but he has seen the majority of reps at the position, along with seniors Chuck Porcelli and Neil Deiters. Frazier continues to take a stronghold on the job.

LOOKING GOOD: CB Nick VanHoose — He recorded his first career interception in Saturday’s win. The redshirt freshman has stabilized the secondary as Northwestern’s top cornerback, but the interception finally provides statistical evidence of his early success.

STILL NEEDS WORK: Northwestern’s defensive line has been heralded for its early-season success, but failed to provide a steady pass rush on Indiana’s backup quarterbacks, offering plenty of time for decision-making in the pocket. The Wildcats’ front four must regroup after a poor showing.

QUOTE TO NOTE: “I think no matter who you play in the Big Ten, it’s going to be a tough game. Whether you’re playing Indiana, Nebraska, or Ohio State, all these teams are tough. Every week, we have to go out there and play like we’re playing the No. 1 team in the nation. That’s how we have to play.” — Northwestern quarterback Kain Colter, on the team’s tough slate.
