Chicago White Sox slugger Adam Dunn cleared waivers and can be traded to any team, CBSSports.com reported Friday.
Dunn’s salary this season is nearly $20 million and his contract runs through next year. While that may turn off teams from wanting to deal for him, he has been hitting well lately and could help a contender in need of a power hitter down the stretch.
Dunn is batting just .227 but has 26 home runs, 69 RBI and a .797 OPS. Since the All-Star break, he is batting .297 and is 9 for 23 in August.
The Texas Rangers and Baltimore Orioles are candidates who may be interested in acquiring Dunn and using him as a designated hitter. However, it is presumed that the White Sox would have to pay a good chunk of his salary to make a deal happen. Baltimore seems to be a more likely destination than Texas because the Rangers are in need of a right-handed bat. Dunn bats left-handed.
Also, the Rangers already claimed White Sox outfielder Alex Rios off waivers Thursday, but no deal has been made.
