Making a late addition to the roster, the Chicago White Sox signed free agent outfielder Austin Jackson to a one-year contract Sunday.
Multiple media outlets reported that the deal is worth $5 million.
Jackson, 29, figures to be at least a semi-regular in center field, with Adam Eaton moving from center to right field or designated hitter, taking at-bats from right fielder Avisail Garcia or DH Adam LaRoche.
Chicago’s outfield crew also includes left fielder Melky Cabrera and backup J.B. Shuck.
Jackson split last season between the Seattle Mariners and the Chicago Cubs, hitting a combined .267 with a .311 on-base percentage, a .385 slugging percentage, nine homers, 48 RBIs and 17 stolen bases in 136 games.
Jackson, who played for the Detroit Tigers from 2010 through most of the 2014 season, has a career .273/.333/.399 hitting line with 55 homers, 296 RBIs and 298 stolen bases in 860 games.
The White Sox cleared a spot for Jackson on the 40-man roster by designating third baseman Mike Olt for assignment. Olt, 27, started last season with the Cubs and finished it with the White Sox, hitting a combined .191/.255/.319 with four homers and five RBIs in 30 games.
