Week 6 – Taron Dickens

Sometimes an athlete has a performance that’s hard to believe. Taron Dickens, the redshirt sophomore quarterback for Western Carolina, had that kind of game in his team’s 23-21 win over Wofford.

For the Miami, Fla. native, it was a record setting performance. He completed 46 consecutive passes (that is NOT a misprint) to break the FCS record for consecutive completions in one game. For the game, he was 53 for 56 for 378 yards passing, his 94.6 percent completion rate also the highest in a game in FCS history. He threw three touchdown passes, all caught by sophomore wide receiver James Tyre, who caught 13 passes for 102 yards.

Despite Dickens’ performance, the Catamounts still trailed, 21-20, with time running out in the fourth quarter. Dickens led a comeback, hitting receiver Josiah Thomas for 14 yards and a first down on fourth-and-eight with 48 seconds remaining. Marcus Trout kicked the winning field goal with 34 seconds left to play.

For the his performance, Taron Dickens has been named the winner of the Academy Sports + Outdoors Award, Player of the Week.
