Golden State Warriors guard Stephen Curry is the overwhelming favorite and expected to repeat as NBA Most Valuable Player.
Sources told ESPN.com that the anticipated honor for Curry is scheduled to be announced in the next few days.
The defending champion Warriors return to Oakland, Calif., on Tuesday after Monday night’s Game 4 in Portland against the Trail Blazers in the Western Conference semifinals.
Curry is still recovering from a knee injury suffered two weeks ago and is listed as doubtful for Monday’s game.
The 28-year-old Curry would be the 11th back-to-back MVP in league history. LeBron James was the last to repeat as MVP with the Miami Heat in 2012 and 2013.
Curry also could become the first unanimously chosen MVP in NBA history. Shaquille O’Neal and James each fell one vote shy of unanimous selection in 2000 and 2013, respectively.
Curry led the Warriors to a record-setting start to the season when they went 24-0 and went on to a 73-9 record that eclipsed the 1995-96 Chicago Bulls’ 72-10 record as the winningest single season in NBA history.
During the regular season, Curry led the NBA with an average of 30.1 points and shattered his own league record by sinking 402 3-pointers.
