The Tennessee Titans released Matt Hasselbeck, adding another former starting quarterback to the market after negotiations failed to produce a compromise to reduce Hasselbeck’s $5.5 million salary in 2013.
Hasselbeck, 37, was called a “pro at every turn” in a statement issued by general manager Ruston Webster.
Hasselbeck started all 16 games in 2011, joining the Titans following 10 seasons with the Seattle Seahawks. He gave up the starting job in 2012 but made five starts as second-year quarterback Jake Locker battled a shoulder injury.
Kevin Kolb, Ryan Fitzpatrick, Matt Cassel — who signed with the Minnesota Vikings — and Hasselbeck are experienced options in a quarterback market that didn’t have a feature attraction.
The Chiefs acquired Alex Smith, another former starter, from the San Francisco 49ers and the Seahawks could part with Matt Flynn via trade if they can find a trade partner.
