Tennessee Titans running back Chris Johnson had knee surgery on Tuesday to repair a meniscus he tore in September.
Johnson wrote on Twitter that the surgery was successful. He told the Tennessean earlier that he was having the operation.
“It’s nothing major,” he wrote in a text message. “People don’t know I’ve been playing with it since Week 3 of the season.”
The three-time Pro Bowler is expected to recover in four to six weeks, according to multiple reports.
Johnson rushed for 90 yards in the Titans’ 20-17 win over the San Diego Chargers on Sept. 22. An MRI revealed the injury the following day. He played through it and finished the season with 1,077 yards with six touchdowns.
He told the Tennessean earlier this month that he believes he has been underused in the Titans’ offense and is open to being traded. Although he has one year left on his contract, he could become a free agent. He is due $8 million in 2014. The Titans are expected to ask him to take a pay cut. If he refuses, the team may cut or trade him.
Johnson is expected to be fully recovered by the time free agency filing begins in mid-March.
