Detroit Tigers left fielder Justin Upton was lifted from Wednesday’s spring training game against the Washington Nationals with an ankle injury following a near-collision in the outfield.

Upton left in the second inning of the game at Joker Marchant Stadium in Lakeland, Fla., after center fielder Anthony Gose stepped on his left ankle while chasing a fly ball in left-center.

According to the Tigers, Upton was removed from the game for “precautionary reasons.”

Upton, 28, signed a six-year $132.75 million deal with the Tigers this offseason.

The Tigers already are without center fielder Cameron Maybin, who is sidelined with a hairline fracture in his left wrist suffered on a hit-by-pitch last week.
