West Virginia’s Geno Smith should be familiar with the Gunslinger of the Week. After all, he has been the recipient twice already this season.
Again on Saturday, Smith was there for the recognition, but this time his role was different. He stood helplessly on the sideline and watched the award winner pick apart his previously undefeated Mountaineers.
Senior quarterback Seth Doege of Texas Tech has been named the NRA/Lindy’s Gunslinger of the Week for his performance against West Virginia. His game was purely Smith-like.
It didn’t take Doege long to get started. Less than two minutes after the kickoff, he threw a 39-yard touchdown pass, and never slowed down. With about five minutes left in the game, he threw his sixth scoring pass – the Red Raiders’ final score in a 49-14 massacre.
For the game, Doege completed 32 of 42 passes for 499 yards with one interception … and don’t forget those six touchdowns. He had 527 yards of total offense, including 28 yards on the ground.
Throughout the 2012 season, the top passing performance in college football each week will be honored with this recognition from the National Rifle Association and Lindy’s Sports. At the end of the season, the NRA/Lindy’s National Gunslinger of the Year will be named.
