Tennessee coach Butch Jones agreed to a new contract with the Volunteers after going 8-4 in the regular season.
“We have the right leader to get us to our ultimate destination and we are rewarding him accordingly,” Tennessee director of athletics Dave Hart said.
Jones was given a pay increase of $500,000 annually to bring his per-year salary to $4.1 million.
Jones is still seventh in the SEC in average annual salary despite the increase.
However, some Tennessee fans were vocal on social media about the extension considering a 9-3 record got perennial winner Mark Richt fired from SEC East rival Georgia.
Six of Tennessee’s wins this season came against teams with record below .500 and another was from the FCS level.
