Terry Stotts, who spent the past four seasons as the Dallas Mavericks top assistant, has been named the Portland Trail Blazers’ new head coach, the team announced Tuesday.
Stotts, 54, replaces interim coach Kaleb Canales, who took over last season when Nate McMillan was fired.
Stotts has been an NBA head coach on two previous occasions, leading the Milwaukee Bucks from 2005 to 2007 and taking them to the playoffs in 2006, and serving as head coach of the Atlanta Hawks from 2002 to 2004.
He has a 115-168 record as an NBA head coach.
He was hired by Rick Carlisle to be a Mavs assistant coach in 2008, and he has been in charge of running the Dallas offense since then.
This is the first head coaching hire in Portland for Blazers’ general manager Neil Olshey, who was the San Diego Clippers general manager last season.
