Spring roundup: Price makes Red Sox debut

Making his first spring training appearance in a Red Sox uniform, David Price threw three innings of two-run ball Thursday as Boston lost 8-2 to the Minnesota Twins in Fort Myers, Fla.

Price yielded four hits, two of them home runs, and one walk while striking out three.

Eduardo Escobar and Carlos Quentin each finished with two hits, including a homer, and Kurt Suzuki also went deep for Minnesota.

Astros 4, Nationals 3

Bronson Arroyo, still trying to come back from Tommy John surgery that has kept him out of the majors since 2014, fired three perfect innings for Washington in a loss to Houston at Viera, Fla. Arroyo struck out three. Astros shortstop Marwin Gonzalez had two hits, including a home run.

Blue Jays 11, Yankees (ss) 4

In the spring game for both, New York left-hander Aroldis Chapman hit Toronto right fielder Jose Bautista with a pitch. Chapman walked two and allowed one run in two-thirds of an inning, while Bautista finished 0-for-2. Nathan Eovaldi pitched two scoreless innings for the Yankees in Tampa, Fla.

Yankees (ss) 4, Orioles 4

New York shortstop Starlin Castro had an RBI double and a run-scoring single among his three hits during a tie against Baltimore at Sarasota, Fla. Baltimore’s Adam Jones hit his first home run of the spring. The Yankees’ Jacoby Ellsbury and the Orioles’ J.J. Hardy had two hits apiece.

Phillies 6, Tigers 6

Philadelphia’s Maikel Franco hit his third and fourth homers of the spring at Clearwater, Fla. Jose Iglesias had three hits for Detroit, which got home runs from James McCann and Thomas Field.

Braves 5, Marlins 2

Jeff Francoeur hit a two-run homer, Bud Norris tossed three innings of one-run ball, and Atlanta topped Miami in Jupiter, Fla. Miguel Rojas and Jeff Mathis had two hits apiece for the Marlins.

Rays 5, Pirates 1

Drew Smyly improved to 2-0 this spring by throwing 3 1/3 scoreless innings as Tampa Bay topped Pittsburgh in Port Charlotte, Fla. Rays leadoff man Logan Forsythe went 3-for-3, and Desmond Jennings added a two-run homer.

Mets 7, Cardinals 2

Noah Syndergaard, pitching in a Grapefruit League game for the first time this spring, allowed one hit and no walks in three scoreless innings as New York topped St. Louis in Port St. Lucie, Fla. Mets shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera exited with a left knee injury, and his replacement, Ruben Tejada, hit a two-run home run.

Royals 9, White Sox (ss) 2

Chicago turned a Tony Cruz line drive to left field into a triple play during a loss to Kansas City at Glendale, Ariz. Alex Gordon went 2-for-3 for the Royals, who got a home run from Drew Butera. Brett Lawrie and Matt Davidson went deep for the White Sox.

Indians 9, Padres 4

Jason Kipnis, Jose Ramirez, Juan Uribe and Shane Robinson had two hits apiece for Cleveland in a win over San Diego at Goodyear, Ariz. Indians starter Carlos Carrasco struck out four and didn’t issue a walk in three scoreless innings.

Giants 3, Brewers 1

Joe Panik had two doubles and a single as San Francisco topped Milwaukee at Phoenix. Giants right-hander Chris Stratton gave up no hits and one walk during a scoreless three-inning stint.

Dodgers 8, Athletics 3

Kenta Maeda limited Oakland to two hits and two walks over three shutout innings, guiding Los Angeles to a win at Mesa, Ariz. Dodgers catcher A.J. Ellis went 2-for-3 with two RBIs. A’s starter Rich Hill was pounded for seven runs in 2 1/3 innings.

White Sox (ss) 8, Rangers 2

Making his Cactus League debut, White Sox left-hander Jose Quintana lasted 4 1/3 innings and allowed two runs as Chicago dumped Texas in Surprise, Ariz. Avisail Garcia scored two runs and drove in two for the White Sox, who got home runs from Jerry Sands and Tyler Saladino.

Diamondbacks 5, Angels 3

Jason Bourgeois’ three-run, sixth-inning home powered Arizona to a win over Los Angeles at Tempe, Ariz. Peter O’Brien had two hits for the Diamondbacks, who got three innings of one-run ball from Shelby Miller.

Mariners 10, Cubs 8

Chicago left-hander Jon Lester’s Cactus League debut was a dud in the Cubs’ loss to Seattle in Peoria, Ariz. Lester gave up six runs (three earned) and seven hits in two innings. Luis Sardinas, Stefen Romero, Adam Lind, Jose Montero and Seth Smith each had two of the Mariners’ 15 hits.

Reds 5, Rockies 4

Colorado’s Jorge De La Rosa retired all nine batters he faced, four on strikeouts, as the Rockies fell to Cincinnati in Scottsdale, Ariz. Scott Schebler had two hits for the Reds, and Nolan Arenado had a pair of hits, including a homer, for the Rockies.
