June Jones will resign as SMU’s head football coach, multiple media outlets reported Monday.
The school will address the issue at a news conference Monday evening.
Tom Mason, the Mustangs’ defensive coordinator, will serve as head coach for the remainder of the season.
Jones was in his seventh season as SMU’s head coach. The Mustangs lost their first two games this season by lopsided scores. They lost to Baylor 45-0 on Aug. 31 and were beaten by North Texas 43-6 this past Saturday.
Jones took over at SMU after leading Hawaii to a 12-1 season and Sugar Bowl berth in 2007.
SMU was 1-11 start in Jones’ first season, 2008. The team improved to 8-5 in 2009, including a bowl win, and SMU was 8-5 with a bowl victory in 2011 as well.
SMU was 5-7 last season before the disappointing beginning to the 2014 season.
“June had felt for some time he had accomplished mission to turn around program and needed a break,” Jones agent, Leigh Steinberg, Tweeted on Monday afternoon, according to multiple media outlets.
