Joe Flacco might soon cash in on his Super Bowl run.
The Baltimore Ravens quarterback hopes to negotiate a new contract that will pay him $20 million per season, according to multiple media reports.
Such a deal would put him in the financial ballpark with two one-time Super Bowl winners: Peyton Manning, who has a five-year, $96 million deal; and Drew Brees, who has a five-year, $100 million contract. Three-time Super Bowl champion Tom Brady has a five-year, $78.5 million deal.
According to Sportrac.com, Flacco is in the last year of a five-year, $29.75 million contract. If the Ravens don’t re-sign Flacco following the Super Bowl, they could use the franchise tag to retain him. That would give Flacco a salary of approximately $14.6 million.
Flacco is the first quarterback in NFL history to win playoff games in each of his first five seasons, though his postseason stats his first two years were unimpressive. This month, however, Flacco has been effective in the three wins that earned the Ravens a date with the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday.
In playoff wins over the Indianapolis Colts, Denver Broncos and New England Patriots, Flacco has completed 51 of 93 attempts (54.8 percent) for 853 yards with eight touchdown passes and no interceptions. His 70-yard scoring pass to Jacoby Jones in the final minute at Denver tied the game, and the Ravens ultimately won 38-35 in double overtime.
In the 2012 regular season, Flacco completed 59.7 percent of his passes for 3,817 yards with 22 touchdowns and 10 interceptions. His 87.7 passing rating ranked 12th in the NFL.
